2012 Toyota Prius V - Car Review

EDITOR WES RAYNAL: That volumes up my effect of my first produce in the 2012 Chevrolet Prius V. It's bigger in nearly all dimensions to be quite a bit roomier than the regular Prius, and the elements within are an improvement. But it's gradually, the web page drones and the mpgs aren't that fantastic. I got 40 mpg producing home and 38.5 coming in to the office. Meh.

The car has new tires that obviously have better going level of level of resistance, pleasure and keep and are quiet, but the web page is loud, and to me the handling seems even more poor and decrease than little scaled car. Combine that with its less-than-stellar off-the-line boosting and it's generally not much fun to produce.

Actually, there's little wrong with this car that a $10,000 price decrease wouldn't fix; that $36,000 tag is absurd.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR BOB GRIT ZINGER: I'm not quite so deflated by the Prius V. If you want a bigger version of the defacto traditional in substances, this is your car. We neglect that the defacto traditional is an distressing little pug with similar performance. Prius boosting isn't a highly effective fit. Cornering on the economy-minded low-rolling-resistance tires developed a new significance of under information, and in typical the car is not really well equipped or absolutely cushioned. Why do we think that might change in a bigger, more versatile Prius?

For bad.), there's an outstanding navi/audio/center system system, and inner area is sufficient. It's not fantastic, but it's constant. And for the money, this element comes with a quite fantastic effective cruise-control system to go with right in with the whole “steady as she goes” concept. There is some wind flow circulation interference and road interference coming into the bungalow, but that's one of the costs of keeping bodyweight low.

I think some of the tag shock is appropriate to Chevrolet beginning to price these automobiles at a level at which the organization can create some money, instead of costs at a level that offered a huge real-world cause system. At $22,000 to maybe $27,000, a 50-mpg Prius is realistic to a certain swath of the population. But at $30,000 to, in this scenario, $36,000 for a 34-mpg specialized advancement project, that market will likely get little considerably. My continuous problem with the Prius power exercise is the offering think is almost like generating a swaying horse. It seems that it is less identifiable in holiday management or in power technique, but I assume both damage gas utilization.

There are a lot of effective, far less complex automobiles of this sizing available for less money. Versatility, cost-effective gas utilization and similar drawbacks (interior noise) can all be had for $10,000 less in a Mazda 5, for example.

I'll give Chevrolet products on the overall look with this Prius V style, though: There is an amazing variety of useful, configurable position within, and the amazing cup ceiling gives the bungalow even more of a feeling of roominess. The returning seats drop and lie down, perfect for developing up kid increaser seats, and there was sufficient area for 100 bodyweight of dog under the hatch out out. I don't even ideas the Tron sprint anymore (though the middle tendency will never be a fantastic idea), and I actually knowledgeable the monolithic middle system that thought like something out of organization classification on an airliner.

On the road, however, the Prius is gradually, loud and just without anything that makes producing fun. It is vaguely exciting to see how lengthy the Prius can be organized in EV technique, or to see how much stopping procedure regent you can get by changing your producing style. But the fun quickly would use off when you identify how limited the Prius V's all-electric ability is; then you have to ask the dinky petrol web page (nicely) to provide some type of rotating, at which element it revs angrily to about six huge, worrying against the CVT pulleys.

I had the decrease in making an investment a very rainy evening in the Prius V, offering me sufficient possibility to find the excellent of sound deadening Chevrolet generally omits to protect bodyweight. With the implement of normal water in the rim bore holes, the rain drop attaining the roof/hood/etc., the wipers and the din of the web page generating a bicycle in and out, it was complicated for my partner and me to have a regular conversation

If you have to have that several banner, and the Prius is a symbol of position in your group, I can absolutely recommend the more position and inner flexibility offered by the Prius V. But I'd be developing fun of you from the motorist's seat of my ($6,000 less expensive) Nova Jetta SportWagen TDI.

ASSOCIATE EDITOR DAVID ARNOUTS: Chevrolet seems to know its several market well enough. As described, the Prius is the defacto traditional for substances, and the new V is anticipating to create on that element.

The Prius V has that exclusive Prius look. It's a sleek distressing type of display, not distressing, not quite, just Prius.

The extra position of the minivan framework and the style is a fantastic move, but if given the choice I would jump in our long-term Mazda 5 (for $11,000 less) with a little bit more extreme gas utilization (28 mpg vs. 34 mpg) and be more satisfied.

EXECUTIVE EDITOR ROGER HART: I appreciate the mountain of engineering that clearly went into the offering the Prius to way of life. I found the seats distressing, and not having the ability to telescope the rim, I never found a comfortable producing position. Chevrolet features the new tires here, and while they seemed less challenging than on the Prius of past periods, the overall generate is still serious. Despite its relatively little sizing, this is a significant car, dropping the devices at more than 3,200 bodyweight.

After filling up the car with the payload from my every one fourth journey to Sam's Group to see relatives members and kitchen area fundamentals, the handling and reaction was definitely constant. I believe that this is the type of vehicle in which people buy into the whole system and dig protecting petrol (well, who doesn't like to invest less at the gas pump?) and they're confident that by developing several, they are somehow helping to protect Mom Globe. For those types of people, they don't really talk about the producing experience. That doesn't seem to be element of their objective for buying the car.

But that would be a objective I wouldn't buy the car. Others have said it: If I'm going for a high-mileage compact, I'm going to the Nova store and getting in variety to buy a diesel fuel petrol Jetta. You can buy a lot of petrol for the $6,000 you'd protect.
